안녕하세요
한양대 망막전문의
이병로원장입니다.

27년동안 교수생활을 하면서도 대학병원의 시스템의 아쉬움, 환자 중심성의 부족 등
여러가지 핑계로 여러분들에게 보다 나은 진료서비스를 드리지 못해 늘 안타깝던
제가 이제는 보다 가까운 거리와 친밀한 환경에서 여러분들을 뵙게 되어 무척 기쁩니다.

제가 대학병원이 아닌 망막전문센터에서 여러분들을 진료하는 여러 이유가 있지만
짧은 진료시간이나 교육, 연구는 물론이고 학회활동 중심으로 많은 시간과 노력을
투자해야 하는 환경이 대학병원이었지만, 이곳에서 제가 몸소 환자 여러분께
대부분의 시간을 함께 하여 최상, 최고의 망막질환과 백내장에 대한
진료와 수술서비스를 드릴 수 있다는 것에 너무 만족하고 있습니다.

이곳 센트라스 서울안과는 대학에 버금가는 진단검사와 수술의 최신 최고의 장비와
시설을 갖추고 숙련된 서비스로 국내의 어느 망막전문병원 이상의 그야말로

언제나 변함없는
연구 정신으로

이병로 원장은 27년을 안과교수를 하면서 남다르게 오랜 기간을 대학병원 주임과장과 주임교수를 맡아 그 책임과 역할에 충실하였으며, 이는 학자로서 소명의식을 가지고 최선을 다한 것이라 할 수 있습니다. 이와 함께 더욱 대단한 것은 이병로 교수가 망막질환 환자들에 대한 최선의 진료의사이면서 최고의 임상 의학자이며, 임상 망막연구에 관한 그 업적과 경력은 국제적으로도 인정받고 있다는 것입니다. 이는 지금껏 발표한 이교수의 많은 연구와 논문들을 살펴보면 쉽사리 알 수 있고 다음과 같이 몇 가지로 정리할 수 있습니다.

첫째. 연구들 대부분이 이병로 교수가 스스로 창출해낸 창의적이고 독보적인 아이디어와 연구정신으로 이루어졌다는 것이며, 즉 이교수가 직접 망막질환의 진료와 수술 과정에서 이 모든 연구들의 아이디어를 창출하고 만들어 낸 것입니다. 더욱이 이교수는 모든 연구들의 아이디어 발상에 이어 연구를 주도하고 수행한 것이며, 정리와 발표단계에서 펠로우나 전공의들로 그 역할을 하게 하였습니다. 즉 이교수는 최근 15년동안 단지 발표를 위한 연구, 해외 모방연구나 추종연구가 없었으며, 심지어 참가자 역할뿐인 공동연구조차도 거의 없었습니다. 즉 항상 이교수 본인의 발상과 가치를 부여한 망막에 대한 임상 연구를 하였으며, 이와 같은 임상 망막에 대한 연구력은 이교수를 제외하면 그리 찾아보기 쉽지 않습니다.

둘째, 대부분 연구들이 직접 이병로 교수가 망막질환 환자들을 진료와 수술을 통해 하면서 수행하는 망막과 황반질환에 대한 임상연구라는 점이다. 기초나 동물실험, 연구장비 또는 통계를 이용한 환자진료나 수술과 같은 임상과 거리가 먼 연구들이 아니고, 직접 이교수가 환자들을 진료와 수술을 하면서 창출해 낸 실전형 임상연구로서 바로 환자들을 치료하는 과정, 즉 진단과 검사, 진료, 그리고 수술에 그대로 적용할 수 있는 임상연구들이라는 것입니다.

그래서 이병로 교수는 이러한 20년 이상의 망막질환 치료와 수술을 위한 임상연구력과 경험을 현재 이 자리에서 모든 망막환자들의 진료와 수술을 위해 쏟아 부을 것을 스스로 약속하고 다짐하며 늘 모든 환자분들께 감사하는 마음으로 최선의 진료를 위해 땀을 쏟고 있습니다.
